There is no evidence-based reason every home must clean its ducts before summer. Routine duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems, reduce energy bills, control pests, or guarantee better air quality.
Useful warm-weather checks
Replace a dirty filter with the recommended type, make sure it fits, and have HVAC equipment serviced according to its manual. Check for moisture, damaged ductwork, or a specific discharge of debris. EPA says duct cleaning may be considered when substantial visible mold is documented inside hard-surface ducts or HVAC components, vermin are inside ducts, or excessive debris is released from supply registers.
For dryer safety, USFA advises cleaning the lint filter before and after every cycle and checking that the vent is not damaged, crushed, or restricted. Those steps are separate from air-duct cleaning.
Local next steps
In Hampton Roads neighborhoods such as Little Creek, a photo inspection can document an accessible duct concern before service is recommended. If the concern is a pest entry point rather than duct debris, Universal Pest in Virginia Beach serves the region. Compare the tier-specific benefits of the Total Home Health plans.
