An odor from a vent does not identify its source. A musty smell is not proof of mold in ductwork, and a “dirty sock” odor does not by itself establish bacteria on a coil. Odors can come from filters, drains, equipment, moisture, nearby materials, or other sources that need separate assessment.
Use the smell as a prompt to investigate—not a diagnosis
Check for a dirty filter, visible moisture, a blocked drain, or an equipment issue. If the odor is persistent, have the HVAC system assessed. EPA says duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems; it may be considered when substantial visible mold growth is documented inside hard-surface ducts or HVAC components, vermin are inside the ducts, or excessive debris is released from registers.
If you suspect a fuel-gas leak or there is smoke or fire, leave the home and contact emergency services or the utility from a safe location. Do not try to address an urgent hazard by cleaning ducts.
